Bang!
The bullet screams louder than the crowd
The wave collapses on the concrete shore
While the gun screams some more.
The gun exhales a deathly breath
Leaving more crippled
Mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters
No one’s safe.
Once the smoke clears
The scene is bare, bodies removed
As though they didn’t existed, rough outlines
Police dot the street, people closing their blinds.
Blind, to the mayhem on the streets
Media looking for another new story.
“Breaking news, man shot in Liberty City”
Pictures flash across the screen
Brothers, are all that is seen
Though they are not related to me.
Nevertheless, I felt the pain that brought Jamal to tears
The pain that accompanied miss Washington
When she realized the police brought home her greatest fears.
I felt the helplessness of the helpless when they needed help.
I felt how weightless their weight felt when the weight of the world
Could not be felt.
I wear my heart on my sleeve and take it off the shelf
Cuz the reverend said to do onto others as you would do to yourself.
And don’t confuse me, I’m not very religious, I’m not a believer
I pray for this brother and all those like him or her
That his soul reaches the promise land he was promised.
That family receives the justice their circumstances have justified
But we all know that the investigation would’ve lasted another week
If a white family had seen a situation as meek
But Jamal was just another addict
Another gang member
Another misunderstood, generalized, brother
Who had to supply his sister and mother
With money to live after the disappearance of his father.

They think they know that lifestyle, say it’s a choice
Simply because they choose to stay away
They choose to close their blinds, close their ears
To the possibility
Of the reality
Of their deepest fears.
That Jamal is another human being
Is an equal and fought for his spot on the Earth
